Things to think about, include how much you want to spend, what you are using your car for, how you are using it (i.e. what load you are carrying in terms of luggage and people), and where you are using your car (i.e. whether you need to drive on both tarmac and rougher ground, for example).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to spend time doing research to get the choice of tyres right, and your vehicle\u2019s handbook should detail what type of tyre you need. The depth of the tread decreases over time with the use of the vehicle, and starts at around 8mm when a car tyre is brand new.<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, the minimum legal tread depth is\u00a0<strong>1.6mm<\/strong>\u00a0across the central three-quarters of the tyre, and the tread must be at least this figure across its entire circumference. If you are unable to see the outer band of the coin, this means that the tread is\u00a0<strong>above<\/strong>\u00a0the minimum limit of 1.6mm. However, if the outer band is visible, this means that the tread is likely to be\u00a0<strong>below<\/strong>\u00a01.6mm, and you should therefore be looking to take your car to a Motor Ombudsman-accredited\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.themotorombudsman.org\/garage-finder\"><strong>garage<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to have the tyres inspected as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>second<\/strong>\u00a0way to check the tread depth is to use a\u00a0<strong>tread depth gauge<\/strong>\u00a0(they can be bought for around \u00a35), whilst the\u00a0<strong>third<\/strong>\u00a0method of knowing whether the depth is legal is via the\u00a0<strong>Tread Wear Indicator (TWI)<\/strong>\u00a0bars\/blocks that sit within the tread grooves at intervals around the tyre. If the tyre tread is in line with these bars, it means it is below the legal limit.<\/p>\n                    \r\n                    \r\n                <\/div>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\n\n<section class=\"two-cols-simple-image\">\r\n    <div class=\"container\">\r\n        <div class=\"row\">\r\n            <div class=\"col-md-6 order-md-1 order-2\">\r\n                <div class=\"text-box about-text-wrapper py-md-4\">\r\n                    <h2>4. Ensure your tyres look the part<\/h2>\r\n                    <div class=\"description\">\r\n                        <p>As explained previously, tyres are a vital safety component, so if you spot anything that does not look right, such as cuts, tears, bulging or cracking, or see the head of a nail or screw in the tyre, it is recommended that you get it checked out by a qualified mechanic at a local Motor Ombudsman-accredited garage, if it is safe to do so, rather than letting the problem linger.
